Jon Convex / Lusine
Jon Convex has been omnipresent recently: hot on the releases (‘Lied to Be Loved’ with dBridge) and now releasing a mix for xlr8r. Perhaps unsurprisingly from the man who formed half of Instra:mental, they’ve all been smoking.
His latest cut is the Idoru EP, featuring the dark ‘New Model’ and ‘Shadows’ and the more upbeat ‘Fade’ and luscious ‘Fade (G.Vump remix)’. Though all are unique in a quasi-analog melodic techno kind a ting, my favourite cut is undoubtedly ‘Fade’. It starts with a rumbling 80s disco train, and then picks up with beautifully textured ‘live’ drums. There’s staccato synths, a continuing bass and menacingly vocoded vocals. It matters little that the lyrics come through second; the voice is more instrument than poet.
Meanwhile, I love xlr8r mixes. DJs and producers seem to approach them with a bit more humour than other mix series. Convex’s latest effort is a beautiful rumble in Convex’s peculiar brand of electronic music. The most beautiful of the beautiful is a track called ‘Sunset’ by Lusine, an artist who I was yet to come across. It’s now number two on my iTunes (post the new Old Apparatus EP,Derren) - a jutting, slightly deranged, and excellently paced trot through shallow, sunlit waters and a light, humid breeze. This is one for early sunrises, or for post-work chill.
