Grenier - Say Something / Here Come The Dark Lights
New up from Grenier, aka DJG, is a double-A split ‘Say Something’/’Here Come The Dark Lights’. In the way that DJ Rum’s Mountains EP took influence from DNB, techno and dubstep - though defining itself by none of them - this cut from Grenier assumes an insistent beat with familiar and jagged thumps. With bongo timbres and looped vocal samples Grenier does perhaps veer more towards a dub sound than DJ Rum, but the cross is evident and extremely welcome.

Of the two, my favourite is the second side ‘Here Come The Dark Lights’. The sweeping phasers are unashamedly eccentric and overblown, with a luscious beat breaking out at the end of them. The pads are softer than the pitch shifted bassline, which is more percussive than one might expect. And of particular savour is the middle funk out - light, sparse, and suitably energetic. Safe.
