Ambalance
Toronto-cum-Berlin’s XI - creator of sexy sax-crunching ‘Gamma Rain’ - is back with new EPCokewave. The producer, who also recently brought us the incising ‘Immunity/Squeeze’ single, delivers this new cut with fellow Canadian Skeleton Bone under the moniker Ambalance. But, rather predictably, the two have been getting some stick for perhaps or perhaps not inventing new genres (in album and artist names / bandcamp blurbs) to generate hype.
I couldn’t give a shit to be honest. All I know - from XI’s twitter feed - is that he spends a lot of time in transit at four in the morning. And wouldn’t care if someone thought he was trying to be cool. Add to this my own experiences of Berlin (am yet to be in Toronto, alas) and I can completely imagine wanting to write this kind of chill but dark, strutting but glacial, music.
Glacial is, perhaps, an odd word to use. Mainly because this release - especially with ‘Hello Nobody’ and ‘Lawn Gong’ - actually possesses quite a bright tone: violin/synth soars on HN, and the beat hops along in Lawn Gong. Yet there is also a sense of cold, circumspection. The percussive taps drip with ice.
I imagine therefore sun on muddy snow, twigs trodden in, smoke rising in the air.
Buy this now before the weather starts to warm.
